In science, we have been learning about thermal conductors and thermal insulators.  We wanted to test to see how thermal insulation worked so we made a Baked Alaska.

To begin with, we laid a sponge cake on a baking tray and completely covered it in layers of ice-cream.

Next we put the cake and ice-cream back in the freezer whilst we whisked egg whites, sugar and vanilla extract together to make a meringue mixture.

After that, we covered the sponge and ice-cream with the meringue mix and were careful not to leave any bits uncovered.

Finally, we put the Baked Alaska into a hot over until it was golden brown.  When we took the cake out, we cut into it and the ice-cream was still frozen.  The meringue and the bubbles within it had acted as a thermal insulator and kept the ice-cream cold.

We all tested the Baked Alaska and quite like it!
