Today in science we learnt how our body digests food. We did a really fun (but messy!) experiment that demonstrates how food passes through our body. Ask your children to recount the experiment to you as they really enjoyed it and learnt a lot.  Afterwards we wrote about what we had observed about how our digestive system works.

1: Food is chewed and swallowed (we mushed bread and banana in a bag and added cola to show acid and water to show saliva)

2. We created a funnel with a cardboard tube and tights to represent food passing into the small intestine. All the nutrients our body needs and keeps from food are represented by what stays in the red tray. The things our body cannot digest stay in the small intestine ( the tights!)

3. The rest then passes to the large intestine and is pushed out of our bodies as waste when we go to the toilet.
