We have been using ordnance survey maps as a starting point for our art and design project.

Taking  a pencil for a walk

First we experimented with lines and patterns and explored the different ways we could ‘take our pencil for a walk’. We tried straight and curved, bold and thin, zig-zags, dotted and dashed lines and spirals and concentric patterns.

Next  we used view finders to select a small area of the map and then transferred what we could see into our sketch books.

The next stage was to replicate our design onto cartridge paper and colour it. We were inspired by the work of Andy Warhol to experiment with different colour palates to see what effect changing the colours had.

Here are a few of our finished designs.
