In the Foundation Stage, our curriculum follows the interests of the child. When the children are particularly inspired by something, we try to adapt to incorporate this. For example, a new film at the cinema has prompted topics about London and Paddington Bear and The Good Dinosaur film has led to the children wanting to learn about dinosaurs. Topics covered thus far have included Under the Sea, Seasons, Weather, People Who Help Us, Let’s Go Wild , Ourselves, Toys, Dinosaurs, Down on the Farm, Where We Live, Space, Festivals and Celebrations, Minibeasts, The Seaside, Pirates, Transport and Buildings. We also enjoy book-based topics such as The Wizard of Oz, Julia Donaldson stories and traditional tales.
We enhance our topics when possible with visits and visitors. In the past we have visited The Deep aquarium and had a visit from The Rhubarb Theatre, who provided a practical workshop about The Scarecrow’s Wedding. We have also visited The Classroom In The Woods, Waltham Windmill, local farms, Cleethorpes seaside, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and we have enjoyed lots of visitors from local businesses and community members. For example, the Fire Brigade, The Police, a dinosaur enthusiast from the Dinostar museum and numerous parents with knowledge or a skill to share!
